At your initial consultation, a thorough examination and a set of diagnostic records (digital X-rays, study models & digital photographs) are taken to determine the nature of your problem and what can be done to correct it. These procedures are necessary so that your orthodontic problems can be analysed accurately.
Digital X-rays [OPG]
The OPG radiograph is a composite radiograph of the teeth and jaws. It shows, in one film, if you have a normal number of teeth, missing teeth, extra teeth, and wisdom teeth. Also, from the OPG a prediction can be made as to when the permanent teeth will erupt. These radiographs are taken prior to starting treatment, and at regular intervals to notice the changes in the position of the teeth ns also to check for resorption of the roots which can sometimes occur in treatment.
Digital X-rays [Cephalmetric]
The head or cephalometric radiograph allows us to compare your tooth and jaw relationships to normal positions. It also allows us to measure tooth movement and growth changes which are essential for treatment decisions. Computer analysis of the cephalometric radiograph differentiates tooth and jaw relationships as they compare to the normal values for a particular age and ethnic group.
Digital X-rays [TMJ / Hand-Wrist]
There are other x-rays that will sometimes need to be taken to check the Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ X-ray) and/or remaining pubertal growth that may be present (hand/wrist x-ray).
Study Models
Impressions of the teeth, from which digital or plaster study models will be made and analysed, are taken at the initial appointment. These will be used to study the orthodontic problems as they exist at the beginning of treatment. The models are very valuable for reference during treatment planning and for evaluation of progress during active treatment.
Digital Photographs
Frontal and profile photographs are a part of the overall work up of an orthodontic case. These facial pictures serve as visual aids for soft tissue analysis. The tooth position in photographs inside the mouth will also be taken to provide an accurate record of the state of the mouth at the time treatment begins.
